Week 7:
A few blogs ago I said I was working on a couple songs, but I had not quite gotten the speed down. This week I decided I wanted to go back and finish them. I put the songs below. The first one is called Malaguena. Most of the songs in the book I am learning from are well known songs arranged for piano. I figured the first one is a Mexican song, and it was originally played on the guitar. Mostly because the page is decorated with little drawings of guitars and piƱata looking things. It does kind of sound Mexican, but I would not have thought of that if I had not seen the pictures on the page.
The next song I worked on was called Jazz Blast. I am not sure if it is an actual song or if it was just arranged for the book. The only reason I say that is because most jazz songs are completely crazy. The rhythms are weird and the notes are every where; most of the original jazz music was written by people who did not know how to read music, they just were trained by ear, so its usually written in multiple keys and times. This piece of music stuck to c minor (except for the occasional d sharps) and luckily 4/4 time. However, the chords have a jazzy sound; I thought it was pretty cool piece of music.
I also worked on the Forest Gump Song this week, and I have to say the I am slowly making progress. I still do not feel very comfortable with the first part (which is what I am working on) since I am having trouble playing both hands at the same time- there are two different rhythms. I am starting to play some of the left hand notes with the main melody, but only the ones that correspond with it. Hopefully I will be able to get that section under my control by next week. If not . . . well we'll see. Anyways, that about all I have to say about my endeavors this week.
